Chinese Festival Week

6th March 2018

Last week pupils, staff and parents of Longmoor celebrated Chinese Festival Week! In preparation for the launch of our brand new Confucius classroom, we spent the week immersing ourselves in the Mandarin culture. As well as learning lots of interesting information about the customs associated with Chinese New Year, we were able to learn how to speak some Mandarin too!

As part of our exciting week, we also welcome lots of special performers into our school. As well as a lion dance and a martial arts performance, there were dancers performing traditional Chinese ballet and folk dances as well as a breath-taking performance of a Chinese ribbon dance. We listened to traditional Chinese music being performed and even learnt to sing a song in Mandarin ourselves!

At lunchtime, we ate a traditional Chinese dinner or spring rolls, curry, rice and fortune cookies. We even tried eating using chopsticks!

We also practised writing in Chinese calligraphy, we used special rice paper, ink and brushes to write out our names and the numbers 1 to 20. We found it tricky but we loved the challenge!

What a wonderful week bringing China to life at Longmoor! Look out for some of our wonderful work on display in our Confucius class!
