Ice Balloons!

7th February 2018

As part of our investigation work, we made ice balloons last week.  The children carefully filled balloons with water, and added a variety of small objects, ranging from toy plastic penguins to a pretend fish finger!  Some balloons were  hidden in the playground and left outside, and others were placed in the freezer overnight.  The following day, the frozen balloons were also hidden outside, and we went on a balloon hunt to find them.  Some of the balloons had burst, others had frozen solid, and some were in exactly the same state as when they were hidden.  Once we had removed the balloon skins, we predicted what might happen if we added salt, sand, cold water or warm water, and then we carried out the experiment.  The best part  was watching – and listening to! – the ice as we added salt!
