Welcome to the Year 1 page! Here you will find lots of information and pictures of all the exciting things we have been up to.  You will be able to keep up to date with what we are learning in school and the curriculum that we are following.  We will post our current study web which will show which topics we are covering this term.  This will also be sent home with ideas and suggestions of how to continue learning at home, including useful website links.  Any letters sent home will also be posted on this page to help you keep track of what’s going on.

Autumn first half term in Year 1

In English we have been creating work based on our Author of the Term: Martin Waddell and created many great pieces of work from two of his most popular stories, Owl Babies and Farmer Duck.

In Maths we are always looking for new ways to make our lessons fun and exciting for the children. We have been using the Smart Board and Maths Resource Boxes to encourage independence and support the children’s learning.

We have been working hard with our geography topic “Our Local Area” and created many fantastic pieces of work all about maps, human/physical features and compass points. This all built up to our Fieldwork trip around the local area. The children had a great time walking around the local area, looking at the buildings, houses and even a quick trip on the train!

Within our PE lessons, we have been learning new skills weekly with the help of our trained gymnastic coach in addition to learning new team based athletic skills and games.

In Year One we are always looking at new ways to improve our curriculum. One such method is the use of the Creative/Independent Learning Area. These spaces have allowed for our children to flourish by taking part in a wide range of activities.

    Autumn second half term

“During this half term we have been very busy in Year One. We have been getting in the Christmas spirit learning our lines and songs for the upcoming nativity performance. We have designed and built our own toy cars as part of our DT unit. In history we have enjoyed learning about ‘Old and New toys’ and had a fantastic time at the museum looking at toys as well as all the other exhibits”

    Spring first half term

“This half term we have been studying the United Kingdom as part of our geography work. We have been learning about the human and physical geography of the UK as well as the four countries that make up the United Kingdom as well as their capital cities. During our art sessions we have been learning about the Singh Twins who are Liverpool based artists, famous for their Indian Miniature paintings. We visited the museum to look at some of their original artworks and even took part in a question and answer session with the twins.”
