Spelling at Longmoor
At Longmoor Community Primary School, we recognise that secure spelling knowledge is fundamental to becoming a confident, fluent and successful writer. Our spelling curriculum is carefully sequenced to build on children's early phonics knowledge and develop their understanding of spelling patterns, rules and conventions.
In the early years and Key Stage 1, children develop their spelling through the systematic Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, securing the sound-letter correspondences and phonics knowledge needed to spell words accurately.
As children complete the phonics programme, they progress onto Spelling Shed, where they systematically develop and consolidate their spelling knowledge through the teaching and application of age-appropriate spelling patterns and statutory word lists. Regular practice, assessment and application across the wider curriculum enable children to develop increasing accuracy, fluency and independence, supporting them to communicate their ideas effectively through writing.
